SEKAS Outreach: Making a Difference

Through our dedicated outreach team, we have been able to share the wonder and beauty of the night sky with our local community and beyond.

Promoting the Wonders of the Night Sky

We are passionate about sharing the beauty and mysteries of the night sky with the community. From stargazing events to informative talks and workshops, our outreach team is dedicated to spreading the joy of astronomy.

SEKAS members like to share their love of astronomy with others. For this we are happy to visit groups like Scouts and Guides and help them with badge work or just for fun. We have visited all sorts of groups of ages from 4 -18 and can create an event that will meet badge requirements and be fun and informative. We bring all the equipment, and can provide for outdoor observing or indoor activities and games, especially useful when it’s cloudy…

We also reach out to the wider public and can attend fetes or give talks, and bring equipment for people to look through (or look at – when it’s cloudy). In the last year we have spoken to the Dover Society and a local nursing home amongst others. We will regularly be seen at the Alkham and Lydden village fetes during the summer months.

Sometimes, just for fun, we set up solar or nighttime telescopes in public places and encourage passers by to have a look at the Moon, or Saturn, or the Sun. Please note, we have specialised telescopes to look at the Sun safely, this is not something to be done with your own kit.

We can also give advice for people looking to buy their own telescope.

Our Stargazing Events and Workshops

Experience the wonders of the universe with the South East Kent Astronomical Society’s stargazing events and workshops. Join us for an unforgettable night under the open sky, where you’ll learn about the latest astronomical discoveries, view distant planets and nebulae through our telescopes, and connect with fellow astronomy enthusiasts.

Testimonials

Hear from some of our event participants about how SEKAS outreach has impacted their lives.

Chris Wantt

I’ve been a member of SEKAS for the past few years and have really enjoyed being a member. The members are very welcoming & knowledgeable. I am very happy being a member of SEKAS, because it gets me out of the house and it helps me socialise with people who share the same hobby as me.

Martin Foad

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a member of SEKAS. Everyone has been extremely welcoming and encouraging, and I’ve enjoyed joining other SEKAS members on trips to The Astronomical Festival in London, and to the Science Festival at Herstmonceux.

SEKAS also has it’s own dark sky site which is available to members. This is an amazing luxury to have, and the opportunity to observe with others is brilliant.

Andy Wiseman

SEKAS is a great community to be part of.

Knowledge is willingly shared to improve existing skills or begin an astronomical adventure to the stars.

Trips to Greenwich Observatory, Herstmonceux Science Centre and Kelling Heath are all regulars on the calendar as are various astronomical events viewed from our dark site.
